engineering

An engineer is perhaps the most important person on a ship. They keep it from exploding into a massive fireball. If you have no engineers aboard and your ship is badly damaged, you can visit a battle station or factory component repair center to fix such an unfortunate issue.
There are a few things the engineer must do:
  1. Keep the weapons charged.

  2. He or she must ensure the weapon arrays stay charged at all times. You can do this by typing weapons to see the power levels they're at, and:
wc: To recharge the weapon array.
During a battle, you can also type the battle command. This launches a system that every 5 seconds will tell you the percentage of each weapon bank and how many enemies are nearby. You can view a shorter version of the weapons command by typing weapons s or weapons short.
    1. Configure the mounts.

    2. See sHelp pre-flight checks.
      1. Reload the warhead banks.

      2. It is the engineer's job to ensure the warhead banks, from which weapon rooms draw, are full. You will have needed to insert some ammunition boxes, bought in various places, in order for this to work. Type reload.
        1. Keep the ship repaired.

        2. This is done using the repair command, either repair main for the hull, or repair def for the defensive armour.
          1. Keep an eye on the shields.

          2. While the pilot can do this, a responsible engineer will ensure that the shields are kept up.
            1. Repair the components of the ship.

            2. For this, you absolutely will want to have this skill:
              Engineering: makes repairs go faster!
To repair the components of the ship, first enter the ship's structure. Type hatch. Only one engineer may enter the ship's structure at any time. Climb through the structure using the up and down commands. Type repair when you are in the right section to repair that component.
At any time, from the structure of the ship or in the engineering room, you can type damage to see the ship's damage. The engineer can also see a number of other items about the ship, but these are also doable by the pilot and so are not covered in this file.
Cy-larkans are said to be incredible at engineering compared to other races, simply due to their ability to physically interface with the ship itself.
              Note on hatches:
The pilot is able to customise which direction the superstructure is made. For example, if you have an engineering room at the bottom of the ship, it would be logical for the superstructure to go up rather than down. They do this with the hatch-c command. If this is the case, instead of typing up, for example, you would type north.
Do you like to be informed periodically of weapon status and the surrounding battle space? The battle command will do this for you. It will read the charge level of the ship's weapons followed by the number of ships within weapons range.
Are you soloing? No problem! By typing monitor in an engineering bay, you can have the computer announce all announcements meant for the engineering bay to the control room as well!
              Skills: Engineering.
              Rank: r40
