ships help: The Dangers of Stars

The dangers of stars

What is a star?

Well, it might seem obvious to you how dangerous stars are, but we'll recap anyway. A star is a ball of super-heated plasma and gas burning in the lonely reaches of space. ON cosmic Rage, they are represented by areas within sectors which have adverse affects on your ships. If your heat shields are not up and you find yourself inside a star, you will take heavy damage every second or so. Furthermore, you will be dragged towards the core of the star and, if you do not counteract the pull, your ship and everything inside (including yourself) will be completely vaporized in the explosion. There are a few exceptions to the above which will be outlined below.

Limitless containers

Limitless containers are amazing! They allow you to store more things than you could possibly conceptualize, and they are near indestructible. The only thing that can significantly effect them is being vaporized in a star. As limitless containers are donator items, they don't get destroyed themselves. After all, we wouldn't want you to miss out on the designs and mechanics you paid for. However, everything inside them does get vaporized in an effort to represent what would have happened in that starship explosion while still leaving you with your limitless container. As such, be very careful when messing with stars because they do have consequences.

star Immunity

Another thing that affects how you interact with stars is the star immunity donator item. Essentially, when you purchase the donator item, your ship will not be damaged by stars when not star studying them, and you will not be dragged towards the core of the star *AS LONG AS YOU ARE IN THE CONTROL ROOM!* The logic behind this is that if you have the star immunity donator item, you have most likely taken advanced piloting courses and can counter the pull of the star with ease when at the controls. However, if there is no one in the control room, it is assumed that there is no one piloting the ship, and you end up blowing up.

How to avoid stars

Within the systems panel of every starship, there is a toggle known as Star Safety. If that is on, autopilot will not allow you to set course for anywhere that will lead you into a star. However, if you turn it off, simply scan for stars and make sure you do not accidentally fly into them. Flying into stars is not always fatal, especially if you learn how to balance against the star using warp. Further information can be found on how to do this both in and out of character, within books written by pilots and help files on the various star-related help files.
