world help: the subatomic drive

The subatomic drive has been around for about 30 or so years and was originally invented in 2464 by a dragon named Vidari Amber Scale.
It is quite a large drive and carries with it quite the punch. It is only recently in fact that it was made safe enough that it didn't flip people off their feet, rather like the quantum drive, when activated.
It runs off of it's own type of fuel and the inner workings are mostly unknown due to copyright. What is known however is that when activated the subatomic drive spends a few moments building up immense energy.
It then uses this energy in a violent expulsion into surrounding space. This seems to create some form of rift or wormhole if you like through which the ship is then shunted, arriving at the new destination.
The rift only remains open for less than a second which has lead some scientists to express concerns that as ships grow larger they will not be able to be shunted through in time, but this has yet to happen.
