ships help: quantum drive fuel

The warp drive has been around for a long time, and more recently, the introduction of the quantum drive started allowing pilots to travel much further, much faster. It introduced a problem, however. Not only does the quantum drive guzzle warp fuel at an astounding rate, but space environmentalists soon discovered that this process left a pollutant behind which, if left unchecked over a long period of time, could have serious negative consequences.

Without a solution in hand, the SDL administration did their best to keep these concerns quiet even from the lower ranked officers. Coincidentally, while this was going on, one of these SDL officers was concerned with just how much warp fuel it took to get out to ships stranded far in deep space. As a ryuchi, Lieutenant Kavi of the Lavender Designation had some difficulty obtaining warp fuel due to the war between Maraquda and Goscro Crah that was going on at the time.

In early 2492, the lieutenant began simulations to attempt to develop a new, more efficient fuel to be used with the quantum drive. After receiving clearance from her superiors, she assembled a team that included some technicians from her factory, Snapp of the Blue Scales, Ada Hopper, Gladr of the Gold Scales, and MI Sergeant Tiosant of the Pale blue scales. Together, this team ran multiple simulation tests and, after more approval was obtained, live tests on ships in deep space. After many weeks and multiple adjustments to the formulas used, the SDF gave approval for the upgrades to roll out to the general pilot corps in early summer of 2492. In addition to being twenty times more efficient than warp fuel, this new fuel leaves no pollution whatsoever.

This new fuel, however, is highly volatile and must be refined under very careful and controlled conditions. For this reason, at least on initial release the quantum fuel will not be mass produced. Instead, pilots can install modules, buildable on industrial plants, onto their ships to add quantum fuel refining capabilities. The refiner takes warp fuel, subatomic fuel, hydrogen and oxygen for basic fuel, or the same resources plus star energy and contlats for a more advanced, even more efficient fuel, and combines them into fuel for the quantum drive. The ship can still be set to burn warp fuel, but this is discouraged and if the environmentalists have their way, may eventually become unuseable for quantum.

What you will need

To refine quantum fuel once the modules are installed, you will need subatomic and warp fuel in your ship's tanks, and hydrogen and oxygen available in at least one cargo bay. If you wish to refine advanced fuel, which gives more fuel per unit of resources used, you will also need star energy and star contlats in at least one cargo bay as well. Next, make sure your ship is set to the correct mode using the qmode command. Simply type qrefine, enter the amount of fuel you wish to end up with, and your ship will do the rest.

Using Quantum Fuel

Quantum fuel is used, from the pilot's perspective, just like warp fuel except it burns at five percent, or 1/20 the rate of warp fuel. Your ship can hold 750000 units of fuel in both the basic and advanced tanks. Which type of fuel burns will depend on which mode the ship is in, which is changed using the qmode command. You cannot, however, change modes while quantum is active.

Although quantum fuel is not available in public shops, it is possible to fill specially made cannisters with either type of quantum fuel for use on other ships or to buy and sell with other pilots. These cannisters can be constructed on factories if you have the correct blueprint.

Commands

qmode: set the fuel mode for refining or using fuel with quantum
qrefine: Refine quantum fuel based on the mode set.
fuel: Displays what types of fuel your ship holds, including quantum fuel if available.
fill cannister: Transfer quantum fuel, based on mode set, from your ship into a fuel cannister.
empty cannister: empty fuel from a cannister into your ship. You must have your ship set to the mode that matches the type of fuel the cannister holds.
