rp help: events
Overview
A concept which players soon become familiar with on Cosmic Rage is the event, a period of time when the entire player base is encouraged to participate in a massive group activity. While most such events are in character, HTPC's, rp classes, and other OOC discussions or lessons are not referred to in character. Usually, events are scheduled in advance and posted on the event manager for the players to be informed when would be best to log in and participate. Below the description, a note will indicate whether the event is OOC or IC along with the time at which the event will occur. Please note that IC events will always be shown in GMT, and OOC events are automatically adjusted to whatever time zone players have set in their options.Participating in events
While IC events are running, the moo is put in Event mode where most OOC channels are disabled and ROOC is heavily restricted in order to promote a more RP intense atmosphere. At this time, players are notified of the game's event mode status as soon as they log in so they may gage whether they wish to participate or not. To participate, simply check the event manager by typing @events for more information, though not all events are posted here, so asking on chat or listening out for context clues might be the best way to get involved. Often times, sticking near other players will yield better results than flying solo as event runners are more likely to interact with large groups of players rather than those hanging out alone in their ships or dwellings.Who runs these events?
Most often, hosts run the big life-changing events which permanently alter Cosmic Rage's major story line, animating senate members, soldiers, or enemies as well as making puzzles the players can solve to either succeed or fail. However, Cosmic Rage also comes equipped with a suite of tools called the Story Weaver system which allows players to deepen the personal roleplay experience for their fellow players by animating their own NPC's, creating and teleporting objects, and generally unlocking their true roleplay potential. While this system unlocks beyond natural abilities, story weavers are still bound by the Roleplay, OOC and IC policy. For further information on force roleplay, see the associated help file and the policy by typing POLICIES.Rules for events
Whether player or host run, certain guidelines are expected to be maintained by participants in the event. If a player is concerned this is not the case, they are always free to use the available tools at their disposal. Within the story weaver system, they can report their fellow players and story weavers, and hosts can take action. During standard host-run events, the @hevent command is an excellent way to communicate instantly with the hosts, whether it be to suggest a change, addition, or concern about the running event. Below, find the guidelines by which players can insure a good time for everyone involved.1. Events often have far reaching changes, look out for these. Does it seem like an event was just an invasion that ultimately failed? Ask yourself why the invasion happened, did it look different to normal? Was there a new ship, new fighting style, or new angle of attack? Was the target influenced in some way? Was a new element introduced, using the invasion as a smoke screen? Often times, what may seem like casual accidents, like a Vacus attack ship acting like a Droidic Fighter craft are actually deliberate by the hosts, and are hinting at backstage storylines that you can grasp.
2. Specialist items in events: If a specialist item is handed to you, appears in the room you are in, or is in some way found by your character, it's yours. Unless it is made directly obvious, for example, "This device can only be understood by advanced technology", is in the description, it is yours to do with as you see fit. Don't hand it off to someone else, even military persons. the hosts or story weavers want you to have it for some reason.
3. Never solo anything in an event, unless it is made blatantly obvious you should do so. It makes the story runners' lives harder than it needs to be, and chances are, you'll miss out on all the great stuff. Rather, cooperate with your fellow players.
4. Try not to play the hero. Sometimes, you might find yourself in a situation that your character is uniquely equipped to deal with, and in those cases, you can attempt to open the door for your character to succeed where others might not. However, no one is good at every single thing, and if your roleplayed actions would allow you to be the hero and get all the glory but somehow end the event prematurely for everyone else, consider your actions before taking them. Where possible, story weavers and hosts will prevent this from happening, but avoiding such roleplay helps them help you.
5. Multiple items. Did multiple new items appear in an event? Don't hoard them, share them about! the hosts would prefer each player to only have, and focus on, the storyline of a single event object. If there are 5 of the same object, let someone else have a crack at them.
6. Inside Intel: Sometimes, events will contain clues to solve puzzles or advance the story. Unless something is revealed in a headline, spoken about by an NPC controlled by the hosts or story weavers, or directly told to your character, it will not usually be taken as valid. While event runners may take your roleplay into account, they are free to disregard or retcon any discoveries which would have been impossible for them to make. In the same vein, story weavers should not reject ideas outright as they may bring to light something that, while not originally intended, makes for a much better story in the end.
7. Just because the event mode has ended, doesn't mean the event itself has! Sometimes, the hosts will run events that are player dependant, meaning the next step is the players. This can be for a variety of reasons, that include time needing to pass, a treaty being written, hosts wanting to see what players will do, and more. Just because event mode is over, doesn't mean you can't continue the story. In fact, you are encouraged to do so. Such gaps in the cosmic tapestry are perfect for story weavers to step up and submit a story request.
8. The hosts will not give answers. Most of the time, the hosts know how stories will end or have a general idea on what story weavers and fellow hosts wish to accomplish, so we are very careful what clues and answers we will hand out to players. We especially avoid answers which would take the fun out of solving them, though hosts have been know to give the occasional helping hand where necessary.
9. Story weavers are scrutinized particularly heavily by the hosts when running their tapestries. While they have most of the authority as to what occurs in their story, the hosts can over-rule them at any time. , If any participant in the story feels a story weaver is abusing their power, they are always free to report them to the hosts with the STORY REPORT
10. Finally, above all else, have fun. The hosts are pretty flexible with events, and we want all the players to be involved where possible. While story weavers are not required to put their story tapestries on the event manager, they are highly encouraged to do so, and anyone participating in such a story is effectively in an event as significant to the cosmic tapestry as any event run by the hosts.
