Utilizing Skills and Stats for Dynamic Roleplay
Introduction
Deciding things in roleplay can be a struggle for some players. Some roll dice, some do odd dances with drums, and others just squint at the sky and shout a number. But hey, now that we've got skills and stats, we've got your back, and another way to actually use all that new gear.
Part 1: I've Got Skills, You Know
Bragging is essential, even if we have a whole channel for it. The point is, you can now drop hints about your skills right into your emotes. Say you're whittling away at a bit of wood to make something. You could mention that your character is quite handy with their mitts, giving your roleplay a bit more flavour. Like so:
emote +handi With a thick branch resting on his lap, %n skillfully wields a sharp knife featuring an elegant onyx handle, expertly carving the uneven surface, making it progressively smoother with each precise motion of his left hand.
This shows up in-game like this:
With a thick branch resting on his lap, Host Augustus Out Of Antonov skillfully wields a sharp knife featuring an elegant onyx handle, expertly carving the uneven surface, making it progressively smoother with each precise motion of his left hand.
Host Augustus Out Of Antonov appears to be masterful at handicrafts.
Basically, stick a plus sign (+) and the skill name before your emote, and the game will show off your skill level underneath. Simple as that.
Part 2: Let's Get Rolling
We've got some commands that let you leave it to chance. These are your @roll
When you use them, everyone in the room sees it, with a special code like (Aug89885). This is just proof that a roll actually happened and no one's trying some sort of cheeky trick.
So, what's in it for you? Let's break it down.
The @roll command helps you figure out if your character will succeed at something a bit dodgy. Using our branch example, maybe Augustus messes up his carving. Before, you'd have to decide what happens next. Now, just type @roll handi, and the game makes the call.
You'll then get six choices for how hard the task is. You pick the one that matches what you're doing. Is it a walk in the park, or does it need some serious talent?
Carving a branch is pretty straightforward, so let's go with medium difficulty.
[Room OOC], Host Augustus Out Of Antonov rolls a medium handicrafts check.
He is proficient at this skill and narrowly succeeds the check.
(Aug89885)
It's all random, see. Even top guys with a 'proficient' skill can mess up now and then. That's what keeps things interesting! But clearly, Augustus is having a good day with his branches.
Part 3: Winning the Duels!
What about when you're interacting with other players? Trying to swipe something, or perhaps haggle your way to a bargain? That's where @contest comes in. It looks at your skill, the other player's skill, and rolls the dice. Highest score wins. Let's imagine Augustus is trying to strike a deal with Bob.
@contest negotiation bob
Augustus out of antonov has initiated a contest of Negotiation against Bob Bobskiy and appears to be proficient at this skill.
(Aug89885)
Bob Bobskiy answers augustus's contest of Negotiation with his Negotiation. He is proficient at this skill and fails the contest.
(Aug89885)
So, this means Bob wasn't so great at negotiating this time. Augustus, on the other hand, probably got a sweet deal. Nice one, Augustus!
Part 4: That's All Folks
This doesn't force anyone to use these features, of course. The idea is to encourage more creative roleplay and add a bit of surprise to your adventures in Cosmic Rage.
Got questions, gripes, or want to get in touch? Put in a support ticket. And maybe give that negotiation roll a go before you do who knows what might happen!
