Sparring in combat
Sparring
Sometimes, you want to fight a friend or train a new technique--without accidentally killing each other. That's where sparring comes in.
To begin a sparring match, simply type:
spar
This starts a non-lethal combat encounter with the following key characteristics:
- You will still take damage, use stamina, and activate combat abilities as normal.
- No limbs can be mangled during a spar, meaning no permanent damage or accidental deaths.
- Sparring ends automatically when one participant can no longer continue without risking injury (i.e., all of their limbs are too damaged to absorb further hits).
- Training and practice fights between friends.
- Skill-based duels where character growth or bonding is the focus.
- OOC-sanctioned practice matches where no long-term consequences are intended.
- Use the focus command to choose the skill you want to train (e.g., focus aim or focus dodge).
- While focused, sparring builds a temporary skill pool in that skill.
- Over time (usually a few weeks), this pool can earn you up to 2 temporary skill points in any combat skill.
- These temporary points gradually drain over time and must be maintained through continued sparring.
- While not required to spar, this adds a mechanical benefit to regular practice.

When to Use Sparring
Sparring is best used for:
If your characters are engaging in a serious in-character conflict--especially one meant to cause injury or death--you should use the kill command instead.
Skill Training Through Sparring
While sparring doesn't directly train your combat skills the same way real combat does, it does offer a slower, safer method for skill growth. Here's how it works:
