Ground Combat, an introduction

Introduction

What sort of game would Cosmic Rage be if it didn't have ground combat?
Well, a peaceful one I suppose, but that's not the point!
the beauty about our ground combat system is you can make it as in-depth as you want.
If you just want to know the basics and ignore all the underlying mechanics, there's no reason why you can't. Similarly though, if you're a number tracking, wants to know the ins and outs, excel spreadsheet making maniac, we've got you covered as well.
To start us off lets talk about the basics though.

The Basics

Cosmic Rage's combat takes place in rounds.
Each round is 8 seconds long and will happen automatically once combat has begun.
The average character can do one action per round. So, for example, if your character is in a fist fight, he will punch the target once every 8 seconds.
Your character has two categories of actions:
*Passive Actions: These actions happen without you typing anything. They can often be enabled or disabled by typing something, but once enabled, they will happen on their own.
*Active actions: These actions happen because you type something and often cause your passive actions to become interupted until the active action completes.
An example of an active ability would be the breathe ability for dragons which breathes fire to attract attention and cause damage.
An example of a passive ability would be shooting a gun, swinging a fist, or kicking an enemy in the face.

How it happens:

Combat will begin in one of two ways:
You attack something.
Or something attacks you.
Depending on your options, if you get attacked, your character may automatically respond in kind by attacking in return.
You can toggle this by typing options automatic combat response.
You can attack something in the way all MUD's use: kill !

So now you're attacking:

So now you and your enemy are engaged in a brawl. Your fists are flying, and every 8 or so seconds, you're punching your enemy square on the nose. boff!
And every 6 seconds, he's giving you a smack in the jaw. Ka pow! Ow!
Why's he moving quicker?
that's to do with your character and the way he or she is built.
These are called your stats.
Your stats will influence absolutely everything about your game play, but don't worry!
If you don't want to know about them now, you don't have to!
The beauty of our stats system is you can completely ignore them, and easily create a good character.
For more information, see help stats.
But anyway, where were we: Punching on the nose, being punched in the jaw.
So, this is taking place every 8 or so seconds. You will see this as the lines of text appear.

What to do.

Now, you engage your active abilities, or modify your passive ability.
Lets say you want to take this fight to the next level and decide to draw your gun and shoot that enemy right in the eye.
You type draw gun, your character wields it and boom! You're shooting that sucker full of holes.
This is an example of you using commands to influence your passive abilities. Your character automatically punches, or shoots, or slashes. But you choose what he or she does and how he or she does it by typing commands.
But perhaps that's not enough.
Maybe you're done with this, and you want to dropkick this Vacus into the 31st century.
You decide to breathe fire over him and type breathe Vacus.
This is your active ability. Your character (who is either a dragon or some weird fire breathing mutant from Lara's imagination) takes a few seconds to build up their flame, a few more seconds to aim, and woosh! Crispy Vacus.

Takeaway, anyone?

Often times, performing an active ability will interupt your passive abilities, I.E, while you are preparing to breathe a river of flame onto the Vacus, you will not be punching him in the jaw.
That is literally all you need to know in order to get started with our ground combat system.
Armed with this knowledge (see what I did there?) You can go out onto the worlds and consider yourself capable of punching and kicking your way out of most tsituations.
If that's all you want, then stop reading.
If you want to go into the multiple layers of immersion that Cosmic Rage offers however, it's now time to type: Help ground combat, the index.
If you're interested on how your specific chosen race is able to do things, type help ground combat for .
Happy reading, and happy punchin'!
