gadgets help: Holodecks

Background

For almost as long as there has been civilization there has been a need for entertainment. Language giving us the ability to share stories, while at the same time, the written word grants us the power to share ideas and visit other places. Plays were written and performed on stages before large audiences. Technology brings entertainment right into the dwellings of many beings. Computer gaming allowed people, for the first time, to take part in fantasies or adventures by participating in the story, though in a very limited way. While these types of games were indeed cutting edge for their time, they could not entirely capture everything with accelerated graphics and flawless sound effects. Thankfully, computers of the modern era have greatly improved since the dawn of these primitive 8-bit interactions. We now have the ability to bring to you a truly interactive entertainment experience. In 2491, the first commercial holodeck was released to the public with great anticipation. However, the technology race didn't stop there. On Christmas Eve of 2495, the chief holodeck technician at Holographic Greatness and her team unveiled the holobook editing suite. Now, you can become the protagonist of your favorite novel. Relive the crowning of ancient monarchs. Fight in long lost battles. All in a completely immersive, 3-dimensional environment. The best part is, you never have to leave your ship!
With very little programming knowledge, any user can become the master of the realm inside a holodeck.

What you will need:

A ship with the holodeck room extension upgrade. Look in the upgrades manager on your information computer to find out where to get this upgrade.
A factory ranked Mini-space station or higher. See fhelp factory ranks for more details.
If you have a mini space station, or higher, you can use the Build command on your factory and build the Holodeck as you would any other room.
A Holobook Editing Suite: If you want to write your own programs

How to use your holodeck

If you don't have any programs to play, you might want to either pick up a copy of a holobook someone else has written on holodisc or write your own. To do the latter, you will need access to a holobook editing suite. Information on how to use them can be found in character by going to the library section of your info computer and downloading the user guide.
Once in your holodeck, you can upload holobooks to its memory by typing save or by exporting them directly from a holobook editing suite. You must be the owner of a holodeck to upload programs into its memory. From there, use the commands on the holodecks to play, pause, and interact with your programs.
If you want to get one of your original works published and sold at Holographic Greatness locations, take a completed holodisc to one such location and type PUBLISH . If you are the owner of the program, you will send your holodisc to be approved. If the hosts do so, you can expect to find your holodisc in stores soon.

Terminology

Holobook: A complete set of scenes, actions, set pieces, and ambient messages that can either tell a story or create an environment for roleplay.
Holonovel: A term used to refer to a holobook which is intended to be played through, for example, A Pauagiwa's song which is a story so must be enjoyed sequentially.
Holosimulation: A holobook which does not need to be played sequentially. In fact, if it is played sequentially, it will likely be over rather quickly. It is usually best to simply jump to whatever scene you need and roleplay within it to your heart's content.
Scene: One of the sets of descriptions, ambient messages, actions, and set pieces that appear in a holobook. Most holobooks contain several scenes.
Story book mode: If you decide to play a program in story book mode, you are simply telling the holodeck that you want it to run through the entire holobook playing one message after another. This is useful if you are playing a holonovel but less so if you are wanting to enjoy a holosimulation.

Holodeck Commands

action : You can use it to make things happen within the scene. Think of it like emoting without having to include your name. This only works while in a scene.
delete: Allows you to erase a program from your holodeck's memory
end: Will fast forward to the end of a playing program or simply end it prematurely.
freeze pause: pauses a playing holobook.
list: Displays a list of programs saved to the holodeck's memory.
next: Skips to the next scene.
prev*ious: Skips to a previous scene.
play: If there is no holobook playing, allows you to select one and begin it. Otherwise, resumes playing a paused holobook.
scene: Allows you to select from any of the scenes within the program you are viewing and skip to it.
